Mission Darkness™ Forensic Crack Cabinet

The Mission Darkness™ Forensic Crack Cabinet system solves multiple problems for forensics investigators and labs. To effectively access and recover data from cell phones and tablets, the latest forensic tools require devices to stay live up to the point of password/passcode unlocking and data extraction. It often takes months for passcodes to be “cracked” or for device analysis to occur. This cabinet keeps devices charged, cooled, physically organized, and securely locked throughout this pre-analysis waiting stage and thereafter. The charging feature is designed to prevent lockout mode, reduce the amount of time needed to break a passcode, and keep the device charged while high-powered processing occurs, enabling the maximum amount of data extraction and unlocking with tools like GrayKey, Cellebrite, Magnet, XRY, BlackBag, Oxygen, etc.

FORENSIC CRACK CABINET

New Gen 2 Version Charges Up to 30 Devices While Cracking Passcodes or Waiting for Analysis

The cabinet is constructed with a durable frame and transparent acrylic walls and shelves, which allow the user to clearly view contents inside and device screens. It includes fully equipped compartments with all necessary charging components to charge up to 18 or 30 devices at the same time (charging capacity depends on the product variation selected). The compartments are spacious enough to store multiple devices, plus associated paperwork/case files. The accessory kit includes seven Forensic Crystal Clear Phone Organizers, which each hold up to five devices in an upright position, optimizing organization and screen visibility. Each high-quality cable set includes a USB A-male to A-female extension cable plus a variety of popular cable tips: lightning, micro USB, and USB-C. Easily change cable tips inside the compartment to connect to the compatible device. Each shelf compartment can accommodate multiple devices and cable sets; the user can rearrange cables however necessary to fit various sized devices. Unused cables can be stored in the bottom accessory compartment. A Noctua fan cooling system consists of eight NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM fans lining both side walls plus a NA-FC1 controller to equalize airflow and device temperature (to prevent overheating from high-power processor speeds).

The complete system ensures that device organization, visibility, and power are never compromised, providing a seamless process for forensic investigators. Read the blog post to learn how the cabinet is used to enhance efficiency and why it’s the preferred mobile device charging cabinet for digital forensics.

If RF Shielding Capabilities are Required

If the device requires RF shielding while it is being charged inside the cabinet, you can utilize Charge & Shield Faraday Bags (available in phone and tablet sizes). The dual-sided USB filter in the bag enables you to connect the device to a power source while it remains isolated from RF signals. The transparent window on the front side of the bag allows you to see device state and when the passcode is cracked.

When using with the Forensic Crack Cabinet, simply place a device inside the Charge & Shield Faraday Bag, connect the device to the inner side of the USB filter, close the bag, then connect the exterior side of the USB filter to the power cable inside the cabinet compartment. When data extraction or device analysis is to occur, disconnect the power cable connected to the outer side of the USB filter, remove the Charge & Shield Faraday Bag from the cabinet, and transfer it into a forensic faraday box, like the Mission Darkness BlockBox Lab XL. The bag can be easily opened inside the box (the magnetic NeoLok closure reduces faraday glove abrasion) while the device is passed into the shielded enclosure. Additional Charge & Shield Bag uses and benefits can be viewed on the product page.

Use with Passcode Unlocking and Data Extraction Tools

Forensic investigators are often working with a vast collection of devices at various stages of passcode unlocking, making it tedious and time consuming to tap phone screens one by one to determine the device state and if the passcode has been cracked. The ability to flip a single switch in order to instantly illuminate all phone screens saves time and helps with overall lab management. The simple steps below explain how to use the Forensic Crack Cabinet in accordance with passcode unlocking tools.

  1. Once a device is disconnected from a passcode unlocking tool and the program is running, place the device (and any relevant paperwork/case files) on an empty cabinet shelf.
  2. Connect the device to power using the USB A-male to A-female extension cable fed through the cable hole, plus the compatible cable tip (lightning, micro USB, and USB-C cable tips are included with each cable set).
  3. Toggle the master power switch as needed to cycle power to illuminate device screens. This instantly shows if a passcode has been cracked.
